New Short Term Work Permit in Mozambique

January 23, 2012— The government of Mozambique has announced a new short-term permit that will allow foreign nationals to work for companies in the petroleum and mining industries for up to 180 days within a calendar year. The goal of the new permit is to facilitate foreign investment and the transfer of skills to Mozambique. Immigration authorities have not yet specified when the permit will become available.

In order to sponsor foreign nationals for the new permit, employers will be required to demonstrate that they have made their best efforts to find Mozambican workers to join their staff and to explain their motivation for hiring the foreign national. Applicants will have to provide proof of their academic and professional qualifications. Holders of the new permit will be able to pursue long-term work authorization from within Mozambique.

The new policy will facilitate the movement of skilled foreign nationals to Mozambique for periods of up to 180 days, and is expected to be more predictable than the current short-term work permit, which is valid for 30 to 90 days.
